Walking silently with God: an introduction to the practice of Centering Prayer, with Diane Clutterbuck: Retreat Leader and Spiritual Guide.

June 14-18 2021 via ZOOM

Workshop Leader – Diane Clutterbuck
8-12 June 2020. Les Jardins des Arts, 7 Rue des Anciennes Ecoles, 79110 Hanc, Deux-Sèvres, France. £210

Diane writes: I came to centering prayer through a chance meeting with Father Carl Enricho, one of the current leaders of centering prayer, in Belfast. I realised as I listened to Fr Carl speaking that God was calling me to this method of praying. Together with a Methodist lay person, a catholic layman and a female Presbyterian Minister we started a centering prayer group which continues to meet weekly. I was later trained to lead Introductory Workshops and  centering prayer retreats. In 2015 I went with the core group of Contemplative Outreach (Ireland) to participate in a 10 day Post Intensive Retreat at St Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado, the then home of Fr Thomas Keating. Last year I was part of a small group which started a centering prayer group based on Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire, the town where I now live in very active retirement.

The Retreat

This retreat is suitable for people who are new to Centering Prayer as well as those who, having practiced Centering Prayer for a while, would like to “go back to basics”.

The first full day is an introduction to the method of Centering Prayer and its context in Christian Spirituality. There will be opportunity to learn theory, practice the method and reflect on learning and experience.

The following three days will be a simple Centering Prayer silent retreat where the focus will be on practice and extending participants understanding of what Centering Prayer is. There will be daily reflection groups where everyone can share their experience of this time together. Ideally we will maintain silence, apart from in the reflection groups, from Wednesday morning until Friday afternoon. If this will be difficult for you to manage in your home context then simply maintain silence for as long as seems right to you, for example you may choose to come out of silence after evening worship and re-enter at morning worship. Please respect the desire of others to maintain the silence throughout the retreat.

Each day there is free time where you may choose to walk outside or do something creative – such as sewing, knitting, painting, wood-turning or some other kind of creative activity. You are encouraged not to spend too much time reading and to fast from social media during the retreat.
